Books for Christmas! An​ all-time favorite book list for 1 day old to 4 years old

Being a book geek is the best.

I love books.

Sharing the book love is my way to say thanks to the awesome writers behind the stories that made me who I am, that make me laugh or cry or both.

I worked in indie bookstores and big chain bookstores.

I worked for a publisher.

I worked at book fairs.

I did it all, kinda. Along the way, I have discovered many, many, many wonderful books.
Nowadays, it’s a bit more work to find the hidden treasures among the many new books, many reprints of popular titles, but it’s always a joy!

Since it’s the season, I thought I’d share my all-time favorite books for newborns, babys and toddlers all together, so from age 1 day old to 4 years old.

Books for the 1 day old to 4 years old

I am kinda of new to English kids books.

Kinda of, because, of course, many classics are translated and therefore, I was able to read them.

But on my francophone side of things, for example, Dr. Seuss is not a « classic read ».

« How the Grinch stole Christmas » came very late in my life. Hooray for that glorious day!

I made many beautiful discoveries, years and years later. Among those, many became classics in our house (which I think is part of what a classic book is, a story that becomes part of who you are… anyway, better not go on and carry on about that topic, or else I’ll never get to the bottom of this list!).

Moo, Baa, La La La ! was given to us by a auntie.
Her kiddo knew by heart, and they were always having fun and playing games when reading it.
Around here, it also became a classic fun story to read, or to start making funny noises.

Sandra Boynton’s books are instant classics, just like the Robert Munch ones.

I read « The Paper Bag Princess » when I was, what… 26, 27 years old? It was a special edition in French, printed in very small format. I used to left it at all time in my purse, so I would always have book with.

While I was pregnant, I found, in French still, a board book version for young kids, AND I bought the original in English (we’re a bilingual family).

No surprise it made my all-time favorite book list!

Already, I know I will update this list. For when I’m done writing this post, half a dozen book titles will pop in my head!

However, for now, some wonderful, delightful books on my list for 1 day old to 4 years old:

• Little Owl Lost, by Chris Haughton
  All his books are great. « Oh no, George! » was my kiddo favorites for a long while.
  
• Love is... is a beautiful book, in every sense of the way. A charming story about love, caring for someone and the challenges it implies.
  
• Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus by Mo Willems is a favorite of my kiddo bubbe’s, and it became a favorite here too.
  In the same collection, I found « The Pigeon needs a bath » bath book! It comes with a bath toy too (careful with the bath toys, you really need to get all the water out and try them well, otherwise it gets moldy and gross).
  
• A Potato On A Bike is oh so much fun. It’s a silly story that really, really well, especially if baby and toddler like to be tickle. Highly recommend it!
  
• The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister is fascinating. Kids love looking at the glittering, the soft illustrations. Plus, it’s a great story about friendship.
  It’s also a Bath Book!
  
• Ok, this one is here really because it’s one of my kiddo’s favorite, not mine.
  Nevertheless, The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carl makes kids happy. In the edition I bought, there are little holes little fingers can poke through, and many tasty treats to dream of!
  
• Goodnight, Anne, inspired by the novel « Anne of Green Gables », is beautifully illustrated by Genevieve Godbout and adapted by Kellie George.
  The perfect bedtime story, short and very, very sweet.
  
• Little You made me cry the first ten times I read it. I then ask hubby-to-be to read it!
  It is such a simple yet touching story/poem, with one of a kind illustrations. A must-have, must-give (especially for the new mama’s to be!)
  
• The Adventures of Beekle: the Unimaginary Friend.
  It’s all friendship, imagination and the wonders of being a kid in this marvelous picture book.
  
• Last, but far from least, Sometimes I Like To Curl Up In A Ball, a board book about the day of a little wombat.

I feel like I could go on and on and on. I did not even include my beloved Gossie, by Olivier Dunrea, or Philea’s Fortune (granted, that one is for the 6 and plus years old…).

Anyway, I hope you did find some new books, or some inspiration for your Christmas shopping list; or for a Birthday Party’s, a Baby Shower, a Wednesday night…
