This week’s word count goal: 32 500 words
Word count so far: 20 764 words
Something very funny happened with this story.
Turns out I wrote a good chunk of the middle of the book first.
I realized it today, as I was browsing writing tips blog posts because I was struggling with the main character. The main character needed more screen time, so to speak.
I had this « great » idea for introducing her, but it was too confusing AND focusing too much on her judgemental, snob, shallow side. In short, it was hard to like her, or care about what she was going through.
So, back to square one. Well, chapter one really.
And because I had her backstory figured out for a while now, I was really fun to dig into it and build around it. Chapter one still needs a great deal of work – I tend to be so melodramatic on draft zero, geezzz – but it flow, it’s fun, it’s the perfect « but how does that girl will get to involved in what happened in the prologue » moment.
Backstories first
I always start a new writing project by writing a rough backstory for each of the main characters.
With this project though, I went deeper and wrote way more detailed backstories.
So glad I did. I’m even thinking I might focus even more on the backstage side of the story than on outlining for my next writing project. We’ll see how it goes.
Anyway, I’ll keep you posted!
Thank you so much for reading. Until next time, dear friends…
